‘Sense and Simplicity’ in practice
10/12/2009 - Leuven
Each company developing ICT solutions or technological products will understand the importance of usability. Whether it is a software solution or a hightech appliance, today’s users do not want complex ‘user interfaces’. They no longer want to struggle with incomprehensible and huge manuals and they expect a simple interaction with products and applications.

This Leuven Inc. session on Thursday December 10, 2009 focuses on the integration of ‘user interaction’ in new products and applications. The session is organized in collaboration with Philips Home Control and Human Interface Group.
Philips Home Control in Leuven is world leader in the remote control market. The design of Universal Remote Controls implies many things for which usability is crucial, such as the installation and general use of the remote control. Human Interface Group offers customized solutions to help Philips achieve that goal. As an independent consultancy firm, Human Interface Group is striving for almost 20 years to optimize the complete user experience in technological solutions.
The first part of this session entails the process of transforming the client’s needs to measurable criteria. Throughout the entire product development process these parameters are taken into account: from the first phase in which the consumer’s needs are evaluated until the validation and release of the product. This process is based on DFSS (Design for Six Sigma), which is in this case explicitly adjusted to usability.
During the second part of this session, the implementation of the DFSS process is illustrated by some examples. Based on one of the most recent product developments, the requirement gathering process and the definition of measurable criteria for the usability of products and applications are explained.
You will also see how a well-designed user interface, usability testing with end users and useful documentation can contribute to a user-friendly product. This will be illustrated by a demo of a few products.
